SITU University
is pleased to present a 4-part
workshop to create a
Victorian Corset!

Denise Hendrick will lead this 4 part corset workshop, at her studio in Lakebay, on the Key Peninsula.  This workshop consists of 4 sessions because the fitting and construction of a well-made corset that you can wear with pride takes time and patience.

Denise, a professional historic costume and corset maker, is a graduate of the Apparel Design Program at Seattle Central Community College. She interned with corsetiere Marie Cooley and Period Corsets, and has also visited museum collections to engage in hands-on study of antique corsets and clothing.  She has created stays and corsets ranging from the 1500's to the early 1900's using both modern and traditional methods and materials.

Practical understanding of basic hand and machine sewing is essential.  Corset construction is not overly complicated, but does rely on precision in cutting and sewing.

The cost for the 4 part workshop is $210, and includes these basic materials:

Corset pattern

Coutil – enough for 2 layers

Metal Opening Busk

1/4" flat spring steel bones

Metal Grommets

Lacing

Grosgrain ribbon for waist stay

Bias binding

Appropriate muslin – enough for one mock-up

You will have the opportunity to cover your corset in a fashion fabric of your choice if you so wish.  Just coutil will make a very nice corset, and fashion fabric is totally optional.  At Session 1, Denise will discuss appropriate fabrics and trims, as well as quantities that you will need to purchase.

Session 1 – Denise will lead you through size selection and appropriate pattern modifications, so you can create a custom-fitted pattern.  You will go home with your personalized pattern and be expected to sew the mock-up by the next session.

Session 2 – Your mock-up will be fitted and additional pattern changes completed.  You will go home with your final personalized pattern and will be expected to cut the coutil, and if you will be using fashion fabric, baste it to one layer of coutil, by the next session.

Session 3 –  Denise will demonstrate busk insertion and construction techniques.  You will be expected to finish construction at home before the final class.

Session 4 – The bones will be inserted and grommets put in, at which time a final fitting will be done.  The sewing of the bias binding will be begun at this session and completed on your own.

Because of the size of the studio and to provide for personalized instruction, this workshop series will be limited to 4 students.  In order for more than 4 students to participate, the workshop will be offered in 2 sections, one on Saturday and one on Sunday.  The 4 sessions will be on the following weekends:

January 7 and 8, 2012

January 21 and 22, 2012

February 4 and 5, 2012

February 25 and 26, 2012

The time the sessions will begin has not been finalized.  We are thinking that one of the sections will begin at 10 or 11 AM and the other at 1 PM.  When registering, please give us your preference for starting time.  You will be informed what time your section sessions will begin.  Because of the location of this workshop, we will help with car pooling.

Please register for either the Saturday section or the Sunday section.  If you are unable to attend all 4 sessions of your section, adjustments to the schedule will be considered on an individual basis.

I expect both the Saturday and the Sunday sections of this workshop series to sell out, so please register by emailing Bobbie@SITUSeattle.com immediately, telling me if you prefer Saturday, Sunday or either day.   Payment may be made using PayPal or by check.  Make out your check for $210 payable to Bobbie Kalben (SITU is not a legal entity for banking purposes), put “SITU Corset Workshop” in the memo line of the check and mail your check to:
