"A Gathering of Rebels"

Sunday, October 26, 2014

You are called to a secret meeting in the old city. Walk the cobbled streets of Pioneer Square into the warm and inviting atmosphere of AltStadt public house.  We will appear to be friends and family gathering for a cold drink on autumn afternoon.

Beneath the conviviality may lay a deeper meaning. As the welcoming fire invites us to sit down and talk and enjoy time together is there also another kind of talk going on? Are the rumors of rebels meeting in alehouses talking independence from England true?  Are you for majesty or for freedom?  We may look like colonials just sharing some autumn ale and a bit of gossip over a game board, but talk of sedition is the undercurrent of our talk.

Germantown close by Philadelphia is the appointed place. Who would suspect our colonial brethren would gather in such a place known for its peaceful ways?  Come to the AltStadt where we have platters of good food to warm you.  The tavern host will have the best cider and beer on tap.  Bring your game boards and cards to present an innocent picture if any redcoats or loyalists should happen by.

Soon we’ll be having the annual celebration to commemorate William Penn’s signing of the charter for Germantown, site of the peaceful Quakers and others of a faithful and an attitude of brotherly love.

Yes, we are peaceable people. But the Bailiffs and Burgesses from that King George are taking it too far with their taxation.  What think you?  Shall we fight or shall we bow down to their demands?
